Public Policy, Supply Chain Management: The new draws for Indian students headed to US

NEW DELHI: Not just the traditionally popular STEM subjects or MBA- US universities are trying to attract Indian students with a mix of newer disciplines like Cyber Security and Supply Chain Management.
At the Study Abroad Fair organised by the US’ department of commerce in New Delhi on Thursday, about 20 universities from various parts of the US interacted with prospective students and answered queries on courses, funding and job prospects.
In her opening remarks, Patricia Lacina, Chargé d’Affaires at the US embassy in New Delhi, said that US missions across India are processing student visas on priority to ensure students can reach in time for their programmes. She also said that at 20%, Indians comprise the biggest chunk of all international students in the US.
A host of newly introduced programmes at various universities are grabbing the attentions of Indian students.
Cybersecurity, Data Science and Information Technology are among such courses at Ohio Dominican University (ODU). Natalie Chang, director of international education at ODU said she is receiving a good number of queries about these.
Roger Douglas of Saint Martin’s University near Seattle, Washington said that courses like Supply Chain Management and Industrial Design are among the ones in top demand.
Some students are looking for a US degree to impart a focused and specialised direction to their academic career.
Santosh, a final year Economics student at Delhi University is eyeing a professional career at an organisation like the World Bank or IMF. He thinks that a US degree in International Economics or Public Policy would be a right step.
Traditionally, universities on the US East coast and states like California and Texas have been the preferred choices for Indian students.
It’s time now to play catch-up for varsities further inland, like in the mid-West, feels Sanjeev Kumar, Dean, College of Engineering at South Dakota State University. One incentive, he thinks, is an attractive funding scheme- a top priority for many Indian students seeking higher education in the US.
“We offer certain courses at a fraction of the cost compared to some other universities. We also offer some of the most specialised courses in agri-sciences. The calm and serene campus in the middle of the American Prairies is a welcome change for someone looking for a break from the city life,” he said.
The US mission in India issued a record 82,000 student visas this summer.
