Vempalle Sharif’s story in National Best Contemporary Stories Collection


Amaravati: In a rare honour, young Telugu writer Vempalle Sharif’s story “Onti Cheyyi” has bagged place in the English anthology of Indian best contemporary stories of the year published by prestigious Aleph Book Company, one of the prominent literary publishing house in South Asian countries. This is the only Telugu story to find a place in the collection of stories from Indian languages. Aleph has published a book titled ‘A Case of Indian Marvels’ with stories from 40 of the best contemporary authors in different languages of the country. David Davider, author of several books and served as the CEO of Penguin, has edited this anthology. He observed in the foreword of the book that these stories reflect many political, economic, historical and human aspects of contemporary India in different styles. He also said that after reading and examining the stories of many current writers across the country, the book came out with the best ones.
Onti Cheyyi” scripted by Sharif was translated into English by the famous translator N.S.Murthy from Bangalore under the title “Crippled World”. The English translation of the story has also been published in “The Indian Literature” in a prestigious Bi–monthly publication of Kendra Sahithya Academy. Vempalle Sharif, who hails from Kadapa district, expressed his joy about his story finding a place in the prestigious anthology. He said that it was a privilege for him to get international readership through the anthology. Sharif, ‘Kendra Sahitya Akademi Yuva’ awardee, had also received Chaso Sphurti award, Gidugu Ramamurthy Panthulu Basha Seva award, Vimala Shanti and Kolakaluri Katha awards at the state level.
